Public Television station WMHT TV in Schenectady, New York signing off its analog transmitter. The station will now transmit solely in digital mode on Ch. 34, although the station will continue to use 17 as it’s ‘virtual channel’. The station signed on March 26th, 1962 and was the second public TV station in New York State behind WNET in New York. WMHT was a charter member of the NET network, the forerunner of today’s PBS. This pre-recorded message began playing at Noon on April 16th, 2009 and looped until sign off. I was caught a little off guard, as the station seemingly dropped the carriers a couple of minutes earlier than expected, although the station did stay on until it’s normal 1am sign-off time. WMHT is the first Albany market station to discontinue analog broadcasting, while the other local stations opted to remain on until the June ’09 cutoff date (although WNYT & WCWN are running reduced visual power).
WLWT-TV Cincinnati signs off their analog transmitter at 11:59 pm June 12, 2009. This video includes the special analog sign off and the first few seconds of the “nightlight” message. WLWT will continue broadcasting DTV information and severe weather information overnight on analog in both english and spanish.
Hands down, this is the best of the analog TV farewells from the Piedmont Triad of North Carolina. Features the final five minutes or so of the FOX 8 10:00 News with Bob Buckley and Julie Luck. There’s a trip down Channel 8′s memory lane, the National Anthem, and the button-pushing ceremony at the transmitter site in Sophia, NC. This was recorded “over the air” using rabbit ears and a VCR. I’ve also included at the end a recording from cable of the final moments at the transmitter site, followed by the opening of that night’s episode of “Seinfeld”.
This is the last half hour WLIO analog channel 35 in Lima, Ohio, was on the air. This transmitter has been in service since April 1972. Video concludes with the shutdown. Recorded from the digital transmission. ADDED NOTE: There will be more video later, showing the transmitter being taken apart, and the new transmitters installed [...]
lesea Broadcasting, Inc. received authorization from the FCC to transition to digital prior to the February and June analog shutoff dates. At midnight on January 15th., 2009 KWHD-TV53 in Denver Colorado ceased broadcasting in analog. Ron Vincent, Cheif Engineer of KWHD gave the former KWHD Assistant Chief Engineer, Duane Evarts, the honor of turning off [...]
June 12, 2009 – Full power analog TV transmitters are required to shutdown at midnight. Here’s the last few minutes for WRGB (6), WTEN (10), WXXA (23) and WCDC (19) in Albany NY. No fanfare for any of these, which was a bit disappointing – especially for WRGB considering it’s historical status as the first [...]
